Swing gearboxes, also known as swing reduction gearboxes, are used in excavators to transfer torque from the hydraulic swing motor to the machine swing mechanism.

They allow the upper structure of the excavator to rotate smoothly and with sufficient torque while reducing the high rotational speed produced by the hydraulic motor.

How Does a Swing Gearbox Work?

The hydraulic swing motor drives the gearbox input shaft. Inside the gearbox, planetary gears reduce rotational speed and multiply torque before transferring power to the excavator swing pinion and ring gear.

Swing Motor vs Swing Gearbox

The swing motor converts hydraulic energy into rotary motion. The swing gearbox reduces that rotational speed and increases torque.

These components may be supplied separately or as part of a complete swing drive assembly.

How to Select the Correct Swing Gearbox

Verify:

• machine serial number if available,

• reduction ratio,
• input shaft spline,
• motor mounting dimensions,
• output pinion specification.

Input Shaft and Motor Interface

The gearbox input shaft must match the hydraulic swing motor. Shaft diameter, spline count and mounting interface should all be checked.

Output Pinion

The swing gearbox output pinion engages with the excavator swing ring gear. Tooth count, module and dimensions must match the original drive system.

Common Symptoms of Swing Gearbox Wear
